In this class you will learn how to add a folk-insqired applique onto a piece of clothing or accessory of your choice. In the class you will choose one design (either the heart or bird) but I will provide the pattern pieces for both so when you leave you will have the knowledge to make more own your own.

1. Choose your design, either the heart or bird shape. When you buy your ticket please leave me a note at checkout with your choice.

2. Bring in a clothing item or accessory you would like to add the applique onto. Some great options are denim jackets, sweatshirts, tote bags or any other pieces of clothing that don't have a lot of stretch to it. The bird design measures 6" x 7" and the heart measures 6" x 6" when finished. Please bring an item or accessory that will work well with that size.

3. We will iron the design onto your clothing item or accessory.

4. To secure the design in place we will hand-embroider the edges of the fabric. I will provide everything you need including embroidery floss, needle and an embroidery hoop to use during the class. This process is great for beginners, even if you have no prior sewing experience!

Students will need to provide their own clothing item to work with. When choosing your item there are two main things you want to look for. The first is that you want to work with something that does not have a lot of stretch to it. If the fabric of your item has a lot of stretch to it then it becomes harder to stitch and your embroidery might end up puckering. The second thing to look for when choosing an item is that the fabric you work with is not very thin. If the fabric is thin it will not hold up well to applique work.

Some great examples for items to stitch on are canvas tote bags, bandanas, denim, button-up shirts, and sweatshirts.

Join Jennifer from Thread Honey to create an embroidered ornament! At the workshop you will be walked through the method of creating an embroidered felt ornament using holiday-themed shapes. The ticket includes everything you will need to create an ornament but you are welcome to bring any specific cookie cutter shapes or paper templates if you have a specific ornament design in mind. Stitch techniques that we will cover in class are the blanket stitch, back stitch and French knot. You will also have the option to incorporate glass beads on your felt ornaments.
